The Net Zero Challenge
Rethinking Work and Design for a Sustainable Tomorrow
What if your workplace mandated work from home to lower carbon emissions?
The Possible Class had the opportunity to conduct decarbonisation workshops for City Developments Limited. The goal? Brainstorm ways to achieve their goal for net zero operations by 2030.
This is no small feat, considering the building and construction sector accounts for nearly 40% of global energy-related carbon emissions.
Change starts small, so we posed the question to their teams: What sustainability practices are important to you? And what small steps can you take to support a net zero goal?
To put this in practice, we posed a design challenge to them. Each team was tasked to build a model that was smart, sustainable, super low energy and aesthetically pleasing.
Using limited materials to reflect various building materials (cardboard hexagons to represent steel, cardboard rectangles to represent concrete, and yellow paper as renewable energy sources), their final building designs included thoughtful features such as porous architecture, greywater collection centres for reuse, and the choice of steel over concrete.
Not only did this inspire participants to innovate together, it also empowers individual commitment to solving sustainability challenges.
As with many of our projects, the ideation process behind each team’s model mirrors their everyday decisions to build a greener future.
